What Is the Function of a Hex Bushing in Plumbing? (Made in Black, Galvanized, Brass, PVC, etc.)
A hex bushing is a threaded reducing fitting used to:
- Reduce one pipe size down to a smaller size
- Thread into a larger female fitting
- Provide wrench flats (the hex shape) for tightening
How It Works
- A typical hex bushing has:
- Male threads on the outside (MIP)
- Female threads on the inside (FIP)
- A hex-shaped shoulder in the middle for tightening with a wrench
Example:
- 1" FIP opening → Use a 1" × ½" hex bushing
- The outside 1" male threads screw into the 1" female fitting
- The inside ½" female threads accept a ½" male pipe
What It’s Used For
- Stepping down pipe size inside a fitting
- Connecting smaller pipe to larger tees, elbows, valves, or couplings
- Space-saving reductions
- Gas, water, hydronic, and air systems
