What is a 90 degree brass reducing elbow elbow used for in plumbing?

A 90-degree reducing brass elbow is a brass fitting that:
  • Changes pipe direction by 90 degrees
  • Reduces from one pipe size to a smaller size at the same time
So it performs two functions in one fitting: a turn and a size reduction.

How It’s Configured

Most commonly:
  • Female thread (FIP) x Female thread (FIP)
  • One side is larger, the other side is smaller
Here is an example:
  • 1" FIP × ½" FIP reducing 90° elbow
  • One side accepts 1" male pipe
  • Other side accepts ½" male pipe
What It’s Used For
  • When a larger supply line must turn and step down to a smaller branch
  • Saves space and fittings (no separate reducer + elbow needed)
Common in:
  • Water lines
  • Hydronic heating
  • Compressed air
  • Light industrial piping
Why Brass?
  • Corrosion resistant
  • Strong and long-lasting
  • Approved for potable water in most applications
