A hose bib is one of the most common exterior plumbing fixtures and one of the most frequently replaced. Whether you're repairing a cracked bib after a freeze or roughing in a new exterior faucet, choosing the right one upfront saves a callback.
Frost-Free vs. Standard Hose Bibs
This is the first decision on every hose bib job.
- Standard hose bibs have the valve seat at the exterior wall. If water isn't drained after use in freezing temps, the body can crack.
- Frost-free (anti-freeze) hose bibs have the valve seat 4 to 12 inches inside the wall, in the heated space. When the handle is closed, water drains out of the exposed pipe automatically. They're the right choice in any climate that sees freezing temperatures.
Sizing: 1/2" vs. 3/4"
Most residential hose bibs are 1/2" (matching standard residential supply lines). Use 3/4" when:
- You need higher flow for irrigation or commercial wash-down applications
- The supply line feeding it is 3/4"
- The customer is running multiple hose connections simultaneously
Anti-Siphon Requirements
Many codes now require anti-siphon (backflow prevention) on all exterior hose bibs to prevent contaminated water from being siphoned back into the potable supply. This is especially common in commercial and irrigation applications. You can satisfy this with:
- A hose bib with a built-in vacuum breaker
- A separate hose bib vacuum breaker screwed onto the outlet
Check local code. In many areas, this is non-negotiable on new installs.
Material: Brass vs. Chrome vs. Plastic
For durability and longevity, brass is the standard for professional installs. Chrome-plated brass works for aesthetic applications near finished areas. Avoid plastic in any climate with freeze risk.
Installation Tips for Contractors
- Always use thread sealant tape or pipe dope on the supply connection
- On frost-free bibs, ensure there's a slight downward pitch toward the exterior so the standpipe drains fully when closed
- Support the bib at the wall to prevent stress on the supply line
